Chelsea pivot to experience: Blues target Henderson and Welbeck

Chelsea have initiated a significant shift in their transfer policy, moving to secure the services of two of the Premier League’s most experienced campaigners in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.

The club has held positive initial talks regarding a deal for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, 35, while also registering a firm interest in Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson. The 36-year-old Henderson, who remains a fixture in Thomas Tuchel’s England setup, is currently recovering from an arm injury sustained during the 2026 World Cup.

A Strategic Pivot

The pursuit of the pair represents a notable departure from the recruitment model implemented since the BlueCo takeover in 2022. Chelsea have not paid a transfer fee for a player over the age of 26 since the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang four years ago, and have not fielded a player over 30 since Thiago Silva’s departure in May 2024.

Head coach Xabi Alonso, speaking after a pre-season victory, declined to comment on specific targets but emphasized the necessity of achieving a 'complete squad' with the right balance of qualities and positions before the window closes.

What the targets offer

• Jordan Henderson: Valued for his leadership and character, the midfielder has impressed at Brentford since his return from Ajax in 2025. Brentford have indicated they would not stand in his way should a major club approach.
• Danny Welbeck: Coming off a 13-goal campaign for Brighton, the striker is viewed as a reliable, physically imposing option who offers proven top-flight pedigree.

The potential arrival of Welbeck, in particular, casts further uncertainty over the futures of Chelsea’s existing forward line, including Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marc Guiu. With the club having already invested heavily in the squad this summer—most notably through the record-breaking signing of Morgan Rogers—the focus has clearly shifted toward immediate, proven impact.
