Chelsea left furious as Monaco collapse Lamine Camara deal in deadline day U-turn
Club sources have described the French side’s decision to renege on a written agreement as “extraordinary,” leaving Chelsea’s midfield plans in disarray.
Chelsea’s deadline day business ended in acrimony after Monaco sensationally pulled out of a deal to sell midfielder Lamine Camara, despite the two clubs having reached a formal, written agreement.
The transfer, valued at £47 million, had been revived late in the window following complications in Monaco’s separate dealings with Everton regarding Folarin Balogun. With the French club initially under pressure to balance their books, Chelsea’s recruitment team successfully negotiated terms for the 20-year-old, who was slated to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
A breakdown in professional conduct
The situation shifted rapidly when Monaco’s negotiations with Everton over Balogun were restructured. Once those terms were altered, Monaco no longer faced the same financial urgency to offload Camara and subsequently informed Chelsea they were withdrawing from the transfer.
Chelsea believe Monaco have acted in a deeply unprofessional manner and club sources have described their decision to pull out as 'extraordinary'.
The collapse of the deal leaves Chelsea in a difficult position. The club had been aggressively pursuing midfield reinforcements in anticipation of Enzo Fernandez’s £125 million move to Manchester City. While Chelsea had the opportunity to walk away from the Fernandez sale once it became clear the Camara deal was failing, the club opted to honour their own written commitments to City, demonstrating a stark contrast in integrity between the two parties.
What this means for Xabi Alonso
For head coach Xabi Alonso, the failure to secure Camara represents a significant blow to his tactical depth for the coming season. The club had identified the midfielder as a primary target to bolster the engine room, and the late-stage U-turn has left the recruitment team scrambling to address the void left by outgoing personnel.
