Chelsea fall to Juventus in Hong Kong as pre-season frustrations mount

Chelsea’s pre-season preparations hit another speed bump in Hong Kong on Wednesday, as Xabi Alonso’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Juventus. In a match that rarely ignited, it was a moment of individual brilliance from Edon Zhegrova in the 68th minute that ultimately separated the two sides.

The result marks consecutive defeats for the Blues, who struggled to translate their possession into meaningful goal-scoring opportunities. While Alonso continues to experiment with a back-four system ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, the final third remains a clear area for refinement.

New faces and a familiar struggle

The fixture provided an opportunity to integrate new arrivals, with Danny Welbeck and Geovany Quenda handed starts. The pair showed flashes of promise down the right flank, most notably when a Quenda delivery found Welbeck, whose header drifted narrowly wide before the interval. However, the lack of clinical edge was evident throughout.

The Blues were notably shorthanded, with Cole Palmer sidelined by a minor injury and Morgan Rogers absent from the starting XI. Despite the personnel challenges, the lack of penetration against a disciplined Juventus side will be a point of focus for the coaching staff as the tour progresses.

The substitute sparked the game into life with the only moment of notable quality when he latched onto Kenan Yildiz's lay-off before curling his first-time effort into the top left corner.

Mudryk returns to the fold

One positive note for the travelling support was the return of Mykhailo Mudryk. The forward made his first appearance since November 2024 following the resolution of his anti-doping proceedings, entering the fray with just under ten minutes remaining. While his cameo could not salvage a result, his return provides a much-needed option for Alonso’s attacking rotation.

Chelsea will look to regroup quickly as their pre-season schedule continues with upcoming tests against AC Milan in Jakarta and Johor Darul Ta'zim, before returning to Stamford Bridge to face Real Sociedad on August 15.
