Chelsea open talks with Brighton for Danny Welbeck

Chelsea have entered into positive initial discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding the potential signing of striker Danny Welbeck, according to reports from Sky Sports.

With just one year remaining on his current contract at the Amex Stadium, Brighton are reportedly prepared to facilitate a move for the 35-year-old, provided a fair valuation is met. Welbeck remains a productive presence in the top flight, having registered 13 Premier League goals during the 2025/26 campaign.

A pivot toward experience

The pursuit of Welbeck signals a distinct departure from the recruitment model that has defined the BlueCo era. While the club has previously focused almost exclusively on high-ceiling youth prospects, the current strategy under Xabi Alonso appears to prioritize immediate, proven Premier League experience.

Chelsea's four senior strikers have an average age of just 23. The Brighton veteran has 400 appearances and 90 goals on his own. Chelsea are crying out for these experienced heads to guide the way.
