Chelsea intensify pursuit of Pep Chavarria as Xabi Alonso seeks defensive reinforcement
With Marc Cucurella now established at the Bernabéu, the club has tabled an improved offer for the Rayo Vallecano left-back.
Chelsea’s search for a successor to Marc Cucurella has moved into a decisive phase, with the club reportedly submitting an improved bid for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria.
Following Cucurella’s £51.8m departure to Real Madrid earlier this summer, head coach Xabi Alonso has identified the 28-year-old Chavarria as a priority target to bolster his left-back options. According to reports, Chelsea’s initial approach—valued at approximately £12.8m—was rebuffed by the La Liga side last month, prompting the club to return with an enhanced proposal.
Aligning on personal terms
The pursuit appears to be well-advanced regarding the player’s side of the deal. Sources indicate that Chelsea have already reached an agreement in principle with Chavarria over a contract at Stamford Bridge, signaling that the primary hurdle remains finalizing the structure of the transfer with Rayo Vallecano.
Alonso is keen to secure his target as he continues a busy summer of recruitment, with the club already having secured the signatures of Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, and others.
Life after Cucurella
The departure of Cucurella marked the end of a four-season tenure at the Bridge. In a farewell message to supporters, the Spaniard reflected on his time in London, noting, "I arrived here as a young lad with the dream of winning many trophies... I now leave the club being a man."
As Alonso looks to reshape his squad for the 2026/27 campaign, the focus now shifts to whether this latest bid will be sufficient to bring Chavarria to Cobham. With the season approaching, the club is clearly eager to resolve the vacancy in the defensive rotation and provide the manager with the tactical flexibility he requires.
